A true story of sisters brought up as wrestlers in a male-dominated village.
Mahavir Phogat (Aamir Khan) was a wrestler who had to give up his passion to obtain employment for his family. Hoping to pass on his passion to his future sons, his wife births only daughters.
When two older daughters; Geeta (Fatima Sana Shaikh) and Babita (Sanya Malhotra) get caught beating up other boys, he not only trains them to become wrestlers but cuts their hair short, feeds them meat to gain protein and gives them trousers to wear. Even though the girls are bullied, and the other villagers are against this, they grow into the success story today.
The film is very interesting as it brings various elements of Indian stereotypes and superstitions into a comedic level for everyone to enjoy and focus on.
Personally, I enjoyed the superstitions that was shown on the film, for example, drinking goats’ milk will produce a boy. We see it to be funny at first but when the girls are taunted for being different, we see a change in atmosphere and music, making us sympathise.
The film gives the audience an emotional rollercoaster of hope, anger, happiness, sadness and the sense of being proud. Dangal is on Netflix now and I hope you are ready to be ‘wowed’ over their success.
Where are they now do you ask?
